Women’s Work Day

It took less than three hours for 18 women directed by two supervisors to completely install the insulation in both sides of a two-story duplex in Habitat’s Sunshine Coast Village on Tuesday.  The women came from Gibsons, Wilson Creek, Sechelt and  Pender Harbour. Some had experience, but many had no idea what they had volunteered to do. Donning gloves and masks, they enthusiastically set to work. Getting in those “Sweat Equity” hours

Although it may not look like work, these two members of a family selected to become home owners through Habitat for Humanity, are actually responding to a request to take two minutes off from several hours of volunteering at the Habitat Harvest Dinner, Auction and Raffle held on October 23, 2011. Both helped to set up tables, run errands, serve the appetizers, main course dinner and dessert, then clean up, in order to contribute toward the 500 hours of volunteer hours required as a down payment on their home. Habitat Harvest Dinner and Dance

In addition to the banquet meal catered by Chasters of Bonnybroook Lodge, the choice of some fine wines, the toe-tapping dance music of the Joe Stanton trio, the variety of silent auction and raffle items, and the chance of winning the GRAND PRIZE, Habitat Harvest attendees will have the opportunity to “Donate a Door” for a home in the Sunshine Village project. Infra-Structure nearing completion

Progress has been made during this last month of good weather. I all goes as planned the culvert will be installed , allowing the paving of the roads within the Village site. The large tree which the site designer had hoped to retain was found to be unsound, so was taken down the day the upper picture was taken. Another smaller tree came down in the recent wind storm, but there was no other damage. The first duplex has taken on a new look with the addition of porches, thanks to the work of Wakefield Construction. The siding is on its way and will be the next step toward completion. …

Prudential Golf Tournament Donation

The 1st annual Gordon Harmon Memorial Golf Tournament held on Friday, September 9, 2011, donated $5,000 toward the building of affordable housing on the Sunshine Coast. Thanks to all who volunteered to make this event possible and successful, especially to Prudential Sussex Realty in Gibsons and Kenan Mackenzie for the continuing support in fulfilling the Habitat vision– a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.

Habitat Harvest Dinner, Dance & Auction

The Fund Raising Committee for Habitat for Humanity Sunshine Coast is busy putting the final touches on plans for an evening of feasting, dancing, silently going after auction items or taking a chance on raffle prizes. The highlight of the evening will come when the winner of the GRAND PRIZE  – 3 nights at the Whistler Delta Hotel combined with a Scandinave Spa and Whistler Blackcomb lift experience. Habitat Hoedown Fundraiser Helps Raise the Roof!

The toe-tapping tunes of the Billy Hillpickers and an abundant Southwestern BBQ served up by Chef Spencer Watts drew a colorful and enthusiastic crowd to the Gibsons bluff last Saturday night. The first annual “Habitat Hoedown” was a fundraiser to remember with a sell-out crowd representing some of the Coast’s most passionate community supporters. Habitat Chair Gwen Hawkins and husband Ed sported fetching smiles and dusted off their cowboy boots to welcome long-standing supporters and new friends. Telus Work Day at Sunshine Coast Village

Habitat volunteer Julie Pin organized a work party on the weekend of May 29/30 2010 to landscape and beautify the Sunshine Coast Village site with the retired Telus group. The Telus group does yearly good deeds in our community and worked on Habitat’s Reef Rd (Sechelt) duplex last year.   Thank you everyone!
