MEDIA RELEASE June 20, 2017 NINE OUT OF TEN CANADIANS BELIEVE WE NEED AFFORDABLE HOUSING SOLUTIONS TORONTO, ON – A majority of Canadians have made it clear: we are not paying enough attention to affordable housing needs and solutions, according to a new Habitat for Humanity Affordable Housing Survey. “Ten years ago, affordable housing was a hidden issue – it affected so many people and yet no one was talking about it,” says Mark Rodgers, Habitat for Humanity Canada’s President and CEO. “It’s clear from the results of this survey that people understand how important having access to decent and affordable housing is – but they feel that not enough …

Carter Work Project

The Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project Story A hike through Hidden Grove Park near Sechelt takes you through fine young groves of Western Cedar and Douglas Fir. In some places, the ground beneath is dense with ferns; in others, moss carpets everything and mushrooms pop up like they are a part of a magic act. But it’s the rare, ancient, towering, fire-scarred trees that stop you in your tracks and make you want to pay homage to their strength and resilience. There are humans who have this same effect, and Habitat for Humanity Sunshine Coast (HFHSC) is celebrating two of them at its Carter Work Project kick-off July 9 …

Volunteering on the Coast

Hardly a week goes by when we are not supposed to be marking or observing or celebrating something. Most of us probably missed Talk Like Shakespeare Day on April 23, and you might not be particularly interested in Hairball Awareness Day on April 28. But there is one commemoration going on right now that you should pay attention to: National Volunteer Week, April 23-29. The Sunshine Coast is rife with volunteer opportunities — and some of them might surprise you. The Sunshine Coast Volunteer Centre this week has postings for shoreline cleanup workers, readers at Sechelt Community School, greeters for the Sechelt Farmers and Artisans Market and fish feeders at …

It’s National Volunteer Week Next Week

“Not everything that counts can be counted. And not everything that can be counted, counts.” — Albert Einstein Volunteering is about giving, contributing and helping other individuals and the community. Volunteering means working with others to make a meaningful contribution to a better community. The value of volunteering cannot only be measured using monetary metrics but the value of our Habitat volunteers runs much deeper than just monetarily. How can we put a monetary value on ordinary people doing extraordinary things here on the Sunshine Coast. Everyone volunteers for difference reasons. Some people volunteer to expand their networks, work alongside others to gain experience, some to expand their profile but …

Village Transformation by Royal Bank Volunteer Crew

Where a bank of uncontrolled blackberry bushes once stood, nothing remains, thanks to the unrelenting efforts of employees and managers from the Royal Bank in Sechelt and Gibsons who gave up their Sunday day of rest to transform the Sunshine Coast Village in Wilson Creek. Dead branches and sundry debris was also stacked neatly for future disposal. Special thanks goes to Royal Bank Sechelt branch manager who initiated this event, inspired and worked along with everyone who participated. Thank you Jennifer!
