Planned giving: hope for generations to come
Planned giving: hope for generations to come Planned giving: hope for generations to come – David Connors, Board Director Habitat for Humanity Sunshine Coast would like you to take a moment to contemplate your own mortality. It’s a scary thought; one that we often try to push into the dusty corners of our minds. But for some people on the Sunshine Coast, it is a comforting thought as well. Why? Because they know the good they have tried to do all their lives will also continue long after they are gone, thanks to planned giving. They don’t do it for recognition or accolades. “I am not putting out a …
BMO Returns to Help Build Homes!!
BMO Builders Return to the Sunshine Coast to Build Homes Sunshine Coast, BC – Habitat for Humanity Sunshine Coast (HFHSC) has now completed 8 family homes in its Sunshine Coast Village and we are building another two. On July 20, 2017 volunteers from BMO from the Lower Mainland and all over the Sunshine Coast will be volunteering their time to build a fence for the village and to help with the framing of the two new units. “Annually BMO supports team members getting out of their offices/branches and making a difference in their communities” says Carol Carr-Andersson, team leader for BMO. “It is wonderful that we can chose where …
Bill Humphries is having a ball.
Bill Humphries is having a ball. Oh, sure, there is that pesky pancreas cancer diagnosis of two years ago. “But I am the miracle guy. I am still here,” says the 71-year-old who seems to have the energy of someone half his age. So why is he having so much fun? He’s giving away his money and seeing the positive changes it can bring right before his eyes. His connection with Habitat for Humanity began in 2008, when he joined a Global Village group going to El Salvador to build houses in the poverty-stricken Central American nation. “I came back a different guy,” he says. Humphries has circled the globe and done …
Volunteering on the Coast
Hardly a week goes by when we are not supposed to be marking or observing or celebrating something. Most of us probably missed Talk Like Shakespeare Day on April 23, and you might not be particularly interested in Hairball Awareness Day on April 28. But there is one commemoration going on right now that you should pay attention to: National Volunteer Week, April 23-29. The Sunshine Coast is rife with volunteer opportunities — and some of them might surprise you. The Sunshine Coast Volunteer Centre this week has postings for shoreline cleanup workers, readers at Sechelt Community School, greeters for the Sechelt Farmers and Artisans Market and fish feeders at …

Habitat For Humanity ReStore: My Story
This is a post from Micheal Oswald. As one pulls into Sechelt, on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, you might see a building on the left hand side at 5605 Sunshine Coast Highway. The sign reads ReStore. You might say to yourself, “Hmm, what goes on in there anyway?” Here, ladies and gents, is your answer… The ReStore sells new and used materials for home building and furnishing. The money made in the ReStore goes to support Habitat For Humanity, a non-profit organization that helps build affordable home ownership for low-income families. I began volunteering at ReStore in the spring of 2013. I found myself among friendly people, volunteers …
Volunteer Thank You Event
Our wonderful volunteers enjoyed a get together and rib feast at Seaside Centre on November 17. About 75 people attended from Recycling, ReStore, and Construction volunteer teams as well as staff and Board members. All shared an enjoyable afternoon of conversation and good food. A huge thank you to the merchants who supported this event. ReStore Manager Dennis Hollis presented each volunteer with a “I HELPED BUILD IT” pin as a token of appreciation for all that these dedicated volunteers do.
